Writing your Skills
Students will produce a Skills Inventory List for their electronic portfolio project. Students will identify skills (e.g., communication, interpersonal, planning, manual, technical, leadership) and transferable skills students may not be aware they have or currently recognize as being marketable. Skills Checklists will be provided.
- It is easy to name a skill you possess but to describe you skill qualitatively and quantitatively is challenging and important. Use the provided checklist to expand you awareness of your own experience and ability. Notice the categories with the most checks. When you recognize the skills you possess then you can describe your skills more effectively in your portfolio (particularly your skills-based resume).
Skills may be grouped into categories (as identified by the Conference Board of Canada and PLAR)
- Communication / interpersonal / People
- Helping / Serving
- Organizing / Planning
- Teaching /Coaching
- Administrative / Clerical
- Research / Investigative
- Creative
- Financial / Mathematical
- Manual / Mechanical
- Management / Leadership
- Once you identify the skills you possess, create a table listing the skills you possess, the event from your life that shows this skills and a qualifier that rates your skill. An example of this table has been provided.
